Help changing wheel colour?

Hi all,

I'm new here, but been on digimods and photoshopchop in the past. I am wanting to change the following wheel to black:

Someone did have a go at it for me over on photoshopchop, but when I asked for instructions on how to do it or a tutorial, he never got back to me. Anyway this is what he cme up with:

blackrimchangecopy-1.jpg

Even though this was a really good effort, I was abit annoyed that he wouldn't give me full instructions on how to do this! All he said was:
I actually made a black layer on top of the rim and lowered the opacity, then adjusted the levels on the rim itself until it looked right. The one side of the rim looked a bit darker, so I lowered the opacity of the eraser and erased part of the black. I also kept the centre, as well as the lug nuts the same as the original.

Does anyone have any way of doing this that I could understand? Btw I am using CS3.

Thanks in advance
Jonnie

Not really mate as I was after a step-by-step of how to do this?
here, this is how i'd do it:
95023700.jpg

1st - make your selection around the rim
2nd - copy the rim to a new layer (CTRL+J). then tweak the levels (CTRL+L) and mess around with the sliders until it starts to darken it up a bit.
3rd - merge it all down into the one layer (CTRL+E). then copy the rim to a new layer again and change this layers BLENDING MODE to multiply. lower the opacity if need be.
4th - now you gotta focus on the highlights (to give it a glossy effect) and so paint on a new layer pure white and change the blending mode of this layer to softlight.

I did this in under 5min. you can put more effort into each step of course. i only did half the highlights for example. the tutorial took longer to write.
And you ain't gonna get a much better tutorial here about it. so enjoy.
Wow thats pretty cool mark :D
Nice tuto, mark :D

I'm sorry MK211, i just cant replicate what you did here. I have tried it over and over again. I followed your instuction to the 'T'. I'm, just like jonnie, a very fresh nooby and don't fulle understand Photoshop.
For instance, your 2nd pic, where does the black outline(so to say) fall in the picture. its not in the instuctions, then, the 3rd pic. How did you get it to be darker from the right side? when i move the sliders around the rim becomes darker from the left. once i get the right side of the rim dark enough the whole left is so dark you can't see the spokes of the rim. and then when you say paint on a new layer pure white... do you mean chift+ctrl+N and then using the brush tool to paint the whole layer white? I'm sorry, but this got me realy confused. I realy don't have the know how of photoshop all you pro's do and i know one day i will... lol! with lots! and lots! of practice and all the help and patients you guys gives us. :)
Hi MDK187, I'll re-write up a better more detailed tutorial of it soon for you. That should help.
