Graphic Design Exam

Over the next few days ill be uploading numerous pieces of work ive done in college as it's all coming to an end.
Here is my graphic design exam project.

Design Brief
Quote:
To come up with a new design/rebrand for the product Guitar Hero as well as designs for associated products such as the box cover. Thinking how the design could be influenced by rhythm and music.

About Guitar Hero
Quote:
Guitar Hero is a video game with 13 different titles amongst 4 different consoles with spin-offs on other devices such as mobile phones. It’s different to most video games in the sense that although normal console controllers can be used, the game comes with a guitar shaped controller so the player can feel more involved in the game. This innovative design has become massively popular in the video game world and is known to be very influential. The series has sold more than 25 million units worldwide, making $2 billion at retail, claimed by Activision to be the 3rd largest game franchise after the Mario and Madden NFL franchises. Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock which is the 3rd main title of the series is also claimed by Activision to be the first single video game title to exceed $1 billion in sales.

Initial Ideas
Quote:
Guitar Hero had primarily been aimed at an audience who appreciate heavy metal music. This good for a few games, however to gain a broader target audience there should be a wider genre of music used. I could design an easier game, using more popular songs for younger children but Guitar Hero already features an option to change the dificulty, and the songs are already fairly popular. On the other hand i could aim the game at an older generation of people, featuring songs such as Jonny B. Goode by Chuck Berry. I then thought about Pink Floyd.

Pink Floyd have a massive fan base, and don’t play heavy metal music making it perfect for a new edition of Guitar Hero. With this I will have to re-design the Guitar Hero logo to make it more easy on the eye, and make it not as suited to heavy metal music.

Target Audience
Quote:
I will be aiming my product at fans of the band Punk Floyd. These fans car range from children to the older generation. As long as they enjoy Pink Floyd, they should enjoy the game. The game, as usual will feature different difficulty modes to cater for people of different skill levels. Obviously the game will feature many songs from Pink Floyd, as well as songs from artists of the Pink Floyd era and who produced similar music to Pink Floyd.
I will try to design the box art to appeal, and attract the attention of all age ranges, and genders. To achieve this i will make the box art very minimalistic and simplistic. This way i am not appealing to a certain age or gender too much and it broadens out the range of people likely to pick it up in a shop.
(Fuck sake, i submitted it today, well yesterday now, but just noticed some spelling mistakes)

Quotes taken from my InDesign document with all the research in, theres more but im just giving you a taste of what is there.

The Logo. This took me 5 hours but i'm rather pleased with it.
Quote:
Here is my final design idea. I kept the same font as used in the other designs, but the rest has changed. The font I used is called ‘Helvetica’. First of all I studied different fonts,
evaluating the advantages and disadvantages of each one. I ended up sticking with Helvetica as I think it looks so nice, proffesional and sleek.

After I had chosen the prefered font, I went on to editing that font. When looking at the font and placing them next to each other, they looked somewhat out of place. I decided I wanted to somehow join the two words, or make them look more like they fit in with each other. I believe I achieved this well by extending ascendors and stems and also adding a horrizontal underline of the word ‘hero’ coming from the ‘H’ at the start of the word.

I was happy with the outcome of editing the text, but it still needed more work. The whole text looked too hard. I tried a few effects then decided to just use a white outline of the texts. I also faded out the extention of the ‘H’ and the ‘R’. In my opinion this vastly improved the look of the logo.

The logo still looked rather empty, and I needed to show the fact it was a Pink Floyd version. I found a font that looked identical to the text on the front of the album ‘The Wall’ by Pink Floyd. I then made the words ‘Pink Floyd’ and placed it to the bottom right of the Logo.

After moving the text around I decided to have it on one line below the logo. This brings the overall shape of the logo into more of a square allowing the eye to easily view the whole logo. I also made the text pink to add some colour and have some relevance to the band name. I slightly angled the two words ‘Pink’ and ‘Floyd’ to draw more attention to it and so the whole logo wasn’t perfectly linear. This made the logo complete.

The Case. Yes, i did steal the game case template from Autemo, thanks boys :). Not sure how long this took me, long enough though.

Here is the game case i have designed for ‘Guitar Hero Pink Floyd’. Overall I am very pleased with the outcome. I wanted the whole case to tie in with my logo design. To achieve this I kept the same colours, and kept everything fairly simplistic.

The front cover was a very important aspect of this, as it can make or break sales revenue for a game. As aforementioned I wanted it all to tie in nicely with the logo. I achieved this by keeping it all simple, with a black background and the simple spectrum from the fron of the Pink Floyd
album ‘Dark Side of The Moon’. I think this works really well as people who like Pink Floyd instantly know that the spectrum represents the Pink Floyd album. I realy like the front cover, i also made the side of the box tie in with the front by making the logo along one line down the side of the box. The back of the box took the most time, it had to contain a lot of information about the game, without it looking too over crowded, and i didnt want it to look out of place from the front and side of the box. I sourced and edited images to act as game screenshots. I also created a guitar controller that can come with the game as an accesory. I added a selection of featured songs and pictures of some album covers. Overall i really like how the game case turned out.
