Which lens?

Hey guys im in a bit of some help.. i will be travelling soon and wish to know your opinions on these two lenses.. So i am using a d3100 with the kit 18-55mm lens and now ill be upgrading my camera so which of these two would be best.

1 - AF-S DX 35mm F/1.8G
2 - Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-140mm F/3.5-5.6G ED VR

From what i searched is that the 2nd lens is basically the same as my kit 18-55mm lens but a longer focal length.

So which one should i go with guys. btw i will be using it as my daily lens to shoot some randoms and maybe some cars.

depends what you want it for, altough the 18-140 covers a lot more of what you might need and will be a lot more of a all around lens, its a very dark lens due to the f3.5 - 5.6 the 35mm is a prime lens which makes it sharper and overall better quality image, and the fast apperture makes this lens very light and perfect for nighttime handheld fotography, you will also get a much better bokeh (blurred bg) personally i would keep the 35m f1.8, and the kit lens (18-55) and start saving for a faster apperture telephoto lens like a 135mm f2.8

Edit: the 35mm focal lenght is perfect for all around travelling purposes, i might get one soon, i currently use a 50mm f1.8 for that matter and i feel the 50mm is to narrow of a focus, and the 35mm would do better
I'm not a Nikon user so I can't say which is better (So this is just a general overview)

I think people who are not used to shooting with Prime lens will at first find it a struggle to use. But the image quality and 1.8 will make some amazing photos especially at night and you will start to challenge yourself in terms of having to think about framing. Which is what I found really fun when traveling alone.

Where as a basic All-in-one Zoom lens is handy to have but will just produce average quality photos and you may struggle with light at night being 3.5 - 5.6 at 140mm.

You already have the 18-55mm. So no need to double up on Zoom lenses. 35mm all the way!

^Hugo, I've tried 50mm on both crop and full frame, It's a range you either love or hate, I personally dislike it. 35 and 85mm are my go to lens when it comes to primes.

couldnt agree more, the i dot particullary like the 50mm (im a apsc user never tried on full frame) the 35mm would indeed be a ber all around focal lenght, and the f1.8 is a challenging apperture, makes us want to play with the setups a lot more
Thanks for the handy tips guys, i realized that having my 18-55 as secondary lens is best than wasting the money for just a bit more focal length.

I might be using it for some night shots also. Also the 35mm is cheaper than the 18-140 so that's the best choice :)

Also if i wish to get a bit of wide angle i can always use a wide angle lens adapter to simulate a wider focal length.

carefull with those adapters, they tend to reduce the quality of your photos quite a lot
Adapters will generally lose image quality, double your minimum F stop and make auto focus slower.

If you need zoom just shoot on large and then crop the image. xD

Ive wasted a fair bit of money over the years buying lens and a 35mm is one you wont regret. Imo
