Going forward with competitions.

Alright people, it's time to put your thinking caps on.

Naturally everyone wants to see more frequent competitions, and once HUI's M8™ gets around to sorting out the submission and voting system, we'll be able to deliver.

Before that though, I'd like to hear from the community how they think competitions should be set up. Think about things like
  • Should there be one type of competition for everyone, or split into basic/advanced;
  • Should the bases be generic or unique;
  • Do you prefer themes or complete creative freedom;
  • What is the ideal time frame for a competition round;
  • <important> How do we get as many (both new and elite) people to enter as possible;
  • ..and so on

Now before you answer I'd like to give the perspective of the organization/judging. From our perspective, unique themed bases are ideal. Unique so that everyone has to create instead of just clone, and themed so that everyone has the same frame of reference. Too much creative freedom leads to comparing apples to oranges. Not enough creative freedom leads to people "stancing" (seriously, stop doing this). Themes also add appeal from the outside world by giving something they can relate to. And interest from outside opens up new opportunities.

I get the idea that in the past, because we had people like Hugosilva around to inspire people, the competitions were a lot more successful. But ever since then, the standard dropped. And dropped. And with the recent trends people stopped chopping entirely, and just fitted the most expensive wheels they could find, with a bunch of camber. We need to get this standard up again. This means that the choppers need to be willing to take risks with their competition entries. And this means that there needs to be a support system to help each other improve in the background; the forums.

So I'd like you guys to think about it and add your opinions. And please make it a little more than just "I want to see THIS".

All together, so only one comp. It might be some kind of point system that beginners point could be worth more than the elite (hard to implement).

You could try a theme contests. Drifting, VIP, muscle, jdm, etc.
You could give a car that everyone is doing, and everyone can find themselves the base image. Or, for example, you give 3 pic, and each one chooses. Usually the base is not wake up the interest, and in this way could be a small chance to choose your own image.
I agree with Ice Devil. Now some ideas from me.

I have idea to create Tuning Style Contests with 5 bases to choice one from bases. Next idea is for Car Game Theme Contest (Need For Speed series or others)or last idea. Heavy Trucks tuning contest.

basic and advanced could be split to even the chances a bit, but alltogether would be better for progression for the new members
you could supply a base (or bases), or a theme and let choppers choose their own base,..
getting more competitors is a tough one, depends alot on the base and/or theme (for example with the Infiniti Q45 now, I really wanted to enter but I just couldn't get anything done with it, which sucked..)

best time for one contest i think is three week's,and the contest shudn't have specified theme we will decide for the theme,and i'm ok with the base images :D

the reason i am doing quick chops and not chopping like before is because i have a page to run, and my life is no longer allowing for me to chop properly, working on a foreign country with my sickness (meniere's) completely kills my will to loose proper time chopping, i never know how my tomorrow will be, i can promise that i will do my best to participate in future competitions, do my best does not mean managing to finish all the round and be 100% present as some months i feel worst then others to the point of not getting out of a bed

also i do not understand how you completely hate / condemn a style of tuning just because you don't like it (and yes i understand you probs hate it causde everyone is abusing it and doing it wrong), i agree that what most people is doing is wrong (copypasting one car in another) but that is not the essence of stance, you can 100% copypast a race car, a lowrider, a drift car, so why hate on one style? i can assure you that doing a fully stanced chop, where you brush and use your own technique and make it a unique stance special chop can be as appealing and respecfull as any other style, i give one example: LOPI

again i promess ill do my best to be more present in the future competitions and incentivate other people

dont get my post wrong, 100% copypasting same donor/chop, and stupidly copying real pictures is wrong and should not be done

EDIT:

my idea on how the competitions would be more popular, is plain and simple, one competition, one base provided by admin, free to do wathever, just bring the old style competitions back, like it was back then, everyone enters in the same competition with the same tasks, no 3 or 4 things going at the same time, no separating people, doing a begginer and a elite competiton separated just gona make that elite will have one or two entries lol like it happens lately and as for the lower showrooms allways saying ahhh thats unfair thats unfair putting us with elite... well, youll just have to work more and more to get better better, i mean that was how it was back then people worked to go up the ladder, wanna win? work your way up/ practice till you can win,
look on the bright side, its also easier for the admins to manage the comp, cause it one thing to count, not 2 or 3 at the same time

I think the newbs and the pros should be separated, because let's say a newb and pro battle. The newb does a chop that can promote him, and it's as good as pro's, but the pro wins because:
a. he has more history on this site than him (that won't happen often, but it could happen)
b. because he did "more small details"
c. both
So, the first league should be with newbs and beginners, and the second league with the pros and the elite guys, like a championship, but it should be grouped on rank, instead of countries, like the ol' ASC/BPC.

@Hugo, the hate on stance is quite explainable. In effect it really only is focused around a rim change, while devaluing other aspects of the car modification scene. It is neither personal nor distinct, and regardless of whether you completely rebrush the paint and atmosphere, lacks artistic value and integrity. People are slapping the 'stance' tag on stuff that even IS well modified. In fact lots of pages out there have begun to automate wheel changes and you can add ride height and camber to your heart's content.

This is alongside the "trend" out in the communities, resulting in thousands of already made, real life examples of what people are repeating by chopping. We dont really want to advocate spending thousands on a set of rims and airbag suspension as your main form of modification. As with Photoshop's ease of blowing things out of proportion, it has also become a bit of a caricature. I'm all for satire as an art form, but that's not really the intention.

The intention IS for people to push the envelope. As a community we can only judge, criticize and assist each other based on individual artistic input and chopping technique. Seeing as the latter is more of an absolute value, we need more material to work with. If you just 'stance' a competition entry you are basically just saying judge me purely on this limited technique. Your atmosphere can be good, but it can only ever ADD to a chop, not be the main focus. This is a car modification community first, so when someone modifies a car creatively, it should always win the vote over that.

The reality is different now however. People are voting based on how they would like to be judged, not on artistic merit or car modification value. So 'stance' as a style bleeds into the competitions and causes this.. corruption, more or less.

And yes, just a little bit of it is appeal to the outside world. We cant pull in new artists or god forbid even client work when stance is the standard. Even the basic art classes these days cover digital artwork and photoshop has never been easier to pick up. When there are thousands of real life examples along with the basic knowledge, artists and clients alike dont need a forum to exchange ideas and feedback. Autemo loses its merit as a community that way.

We're getting all sorts of signals from the outside world for opportunities. Technical innovation has been crazy lately. We can 3D print molds for intricate parts; Evolution in carbon fiber and metalworking allows for custom body panels; Vinyl wrapping and water printing techniques eliminate the need to respay entire cars; ...And so on.

We're now so good at it that people are willing to buy entire cars, and have someone else coachbuild a shell to their exact specification. Just look at the Glickenhaus and Clapton Ferraris, the Disco Volante. I mean how great is that. If you are talented like a lot of people are here, why would you waste it on 'stance'. Knowing that it makes a car worse to drive should also go against your morals (:p just kidding).

for making more people participate why dont the admins blackmail the users to ban them if they dont participate <_<
