Your ideas are really, really cool you just need to learn how to harness them. Take a bit more time and care with your chops. It does become a bit tedious and it can ruin the fun along the way, but trust me, in the end when you see the quality of the final work, it'll be worth it.
If you can get your hands on a copy of Photoshop (by any means) I would do it. GIMP isn't bad, but Photoshop is so much easier to work with, and can help you get stuff done faster and with better quality.
