I'll add in my 2c.....
Don't bite off more than you can chew.
Keep it simple. Don't have too many variations of competitions. No-one will be able to enter all of them and it'll be a nightmare to moderate.
Let's look at what there is now -
- The Autemo Championship. 5x 2 week comps a year. Looks like they are basically being run back-to-back. That'll go for about 4 months (with voting time)
- World Team Battle. I expect this will kick in some time after TAC finishes. This is quite the event and I imagine it takes a lot of time to manage. It'll probably also go for about 4 months
Which leaves us with a third 4-month window of delicious opportunity.
- However, running tandem to all this are the miscellaneous comps, the scirroco to kick off the site and then the cleverly themed 'what if you had a second chance?'. Throw in projects too, head-to-head battles and people wanting to just chop with freedom. It's a lot of chopping.
Just don't run autemo into the ground by doing too much is what I'm saying.
Now getting back to that blank canvas of 4-moths leaves us with some options.....
- People are talking about a multinational team battle. isnt it a bit similar to wtb? like, even when chopping with people from your own country, you only converse through the internet. why not make something a bit more different?
On that topic people were also taking about skill fairness. Why not just make it teams consisting of one tuner, pro and advanced/elite?? or one tuner two pros if you can get an advanced meber, or a nca, pro and advanced if a new chopper wanted to enter.
I'd like to take this moment and go off on a tangent about a member suggested a while a go about 'achievements' like little awards on your profile page. I like this idea, and for each round TAC there should be like 1st 2nd 3rd then prizes for each level. as a tuner it gets a bit disheartening when the same small group of choppers take home the silverware. this would encourage across-the-board entering. you may even want to split the entire comp into different tiers (all with the same pic and everything, just have leaderboards by category then an overall ladder)
so anyway, back on topic. just a little. i also like the idea of 'themed' competitions - perhaps not as extreme as the creative contests on psu, i think they were a bit too challenging for some novice choppers, resulting in them not entering. the 'second chance' comp was great, i wish i had the time to enter it. something that requires a bit more artistic thought. i dont think this would be best suitable to be run in that other third of the year in a block. i think a 'creative challenge'-type format would be better suited more spread-out throughout the year, as a refresher to the rest. you could even run them between the 'main events' i.e. have 3 a year, but all one-off competitions, no tallying leaderboard or anything. it'll give people an element of freedom, of not being 'locked in' to a competition, they can do the creative challenges that pleases them. i think thatd be important for a format like that.
and we're still left with a 4-month hole. actually, really, i cant see why you cant extend TAC. its only 5 rounds as it is, thats not a lot. or did you intentionally have it like that for what i was blabbering on about above, people not wanting to comp-chop consistently for a long period of time. what you could do then is run two comps a year. i know that sounds hypocritical about talking down the idea of having an international group battle? actually, getting back to that, what about to make it a bit more of its own thing, make that a round-robin? you have the wtb as a true competitive, tree-layout championship to hail the 'best chopping country in the world', but what about everyone gets to go h2h with all the teams, and then whoever wins the most of their h2hs, wins.
Or perhaps, going with the second TAC idea, that could be tiered and broken down into the different chopper levels. you could keep 'The Autemo Championship' has the aptly-titled open-field comp, to find the best chopper across all levels (aka elite ), and then have a second where people only compete for votes with choppers of similar skill. the base, time, etc is common to all. but have 4 or 5 (maybe merge nca up or elite down) different streams. with independant voting, not just everyone with advanced/elite choppers getting 95% of votes then going down picking out the others, coz then everyone would be getting few votes.
a note on the voting system: change it. i cbf to rank 27 chops in order of how good they are. make it a top 3 or something. will pull a lot more votes.
then at the end, the winners of each respective tier could gain automatic promotion (people who get promoted during the comp would get moved up a tier as well), and then have a dogfight between them. i like that.
in summary, this is the chopping calender i'd propose:
The Autemo Championship (an open competition, find out whos best)
Creative Challenge
World Team Battle (run as is or with restrictions on member levels)
Creative Challenge
Showroom Showdown (pick on someone your own size)
Creative Challenge
with perhaps some other misc comps along the way as you please. i'd happy to run creative challenges
anyway thats enough from me. i have a hsc to study for
