That's hard to decide who's the best chopper, even according to some criterions.

Every guy here has a specific style, and most of the time it doesn't look like anything else.

As for me i couldn't choose between so much choppers.

i dont want to be negative and this is ment well , but imo a rating system would not contribute a thing to this community i would say dont do it /use it

why ?

well first of all we have ranks / levels , beginner-intermidiate-pro-advanced and elite , this is already a lot level wise , people in a certain level already have some sort of status by reaching a certain level
THEY CAN ONLY REITCH THAT WITH QUALITY NOT QUANTITY

now to rank eitch member and make it hounest and making sure eitch member got the same results from the ranking system is neir impossible .

i dont participate in world team things so for me that would not give me points ,now the fact is i wouldnt care about points or getting them but members who also dont do a world battle might miss points

i even hated the world team thing in the beginning because that ment all regulair chop contests (the monthly thing) suddenly stopped and results even where discarded
(again not ment as a attack ort negative just my observation)
i liked the mothly comps a lot , way better the a weird world team thing (but thats personal)

and thenthe most important thing for me >> we would have people voting on eitch other (friend votes) maybe even have negative votes between people who dislike eitch other or even jealousy could be a factor


also it would make some people go after getting a higher rank just for the rank
same as posters who try to get as much posts as possible when in fact 80% of the post consist out of comments like > cool > nice . i'm watching this etc etc

i think it could even ruin the great flow and feeling this community has got

stars / ranks imo have never added anything to a comunity imo


sure i understand the idea , because its slow on autemo lately (even in wintertime)
but getting a ranksystem i think is not the awnser

I read all the ideas, they are quite good.

As i told Mark once, i always wanted to create a new chopping site. But I had some problems with another website, my spanish vt community, and thats why i dont have the time to continue with it now. My idea was to create a web based on chop ratings, competitions & battles (no forum), quite different but perhaps it could help you.

It had a points systems, and also a rank system like here. Each rank had also a choppers ranking sort by points.
It had a profiles system, where each user could vote each chop for: New, Inter, Pro, Adv or Elite, instead of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. So if most users voted it was an advanced chop, the chop had level=Adv, if most users voted it was an Inter chop, the chop had level=Inter.
To pass from New to Inter you had to have al least 3 chop (for example) with Inter level and also win 1 battle to an Inter level chop (and some other requirements).

While you won battles and finish on the top 10 of a competition, you won points.

The overall ranking was sort by Ranks DESC and Points DESC.

I wanted to do it like a game where all the choppers could have fun battling and earning points.

I like the idea of a ratings system as it would give people an idea of their progress as they go along, however if we oversimplify art down to a simple rating system it will be impossible to monitor, for example I love simple well executed chops and am therefore likely to rate them higher than exterme chops.In my view its impossible to have a fair rating system as inevitable people with vote for reasons other than execution and talent such as politics.

At the end of the day, this entire ranking system will be based on opinion, and how people see you amongst other choppers. If people enjoy your work, you will be ranked higher, if people dont like your work, you'll be ranked lower, and vice versa. This is why i don't see the problem with the whole people getting unfair votes argument. If somebody gets a vote, then the person giving the vote clearly likes them enough to give them a vote, or they wouldnt give a vote... and that would be entirely fair imo. if somebody gets a vote, then it's because someone liked their work enough to receive a vote...

Let the mods decide, they have skills in spotting skills.

Yes it may encourage work, but what can we base it on?
I totally agree with jack, it would have to avoid taking into account the number of chops produced, but rather, the quality.

Perhaps we could look to what has gone in the past.
If we want rewards for activity, we only have to look at the famous "ps-g points" system. You are awarded points for each post, and the more you write in the post, the more points you recieve. The simple fact here is that it encourages more detailed and better responses.

The only real way to create a ranking system based on abiltiy is through competitions.
If we take a look at the snooker ranking system. In the past it didn't change much, and was based only on major events. However, it has recently been shaken up, the overhaul creating a more competitive atmosphere. So, if you don't compete in competitions, you miss out on points. This may seem harsh, but once again it promotes activity, and will help create a buzzing more active community.

One possible downside, is that choppers who maybe are not as confident, may see their rankings as a direct reflection of their chopping ability, and therefore lose the passion to chop, and think "it's not worth it, my rank is terrible". However, i think a ranking system would really liven things up.

If we were to follow the idea of points per comp, and say there are... 16 comps a year? Perhaps take the best 8 or so results, and use them to compile the leaderboard.
Basing points on community contribution doesn't entirely seem fair, but perhaps there should be special rewards for those who contribute most helpfully and frequently

and no, eventhough someone will say, im not hating on this idea, i just dont see any use for it
if we lets the community decide, it will go into popularity contest which doesnt reflect skill of each chopper ultimately, since some dont like copypaste chops/brushing/whichever style

if we tie it into competitions, it wont work since majority of people aint interested enough to join those competitions and clearly will just be pushed back since they do their own thing?

more things i would like to see, is like this artist page, to have options there to check the artists threads, etc. more of an oldskool, but still well functioning adds to the forum instead of some pretty cliche ranking system that is basically hard to do properly

better idea than that would be to reward of good activity (but how do you dedice what is good?)
if add some pointcalculator to reward from each message/topic/etc it will just keep feeding them spammers and such on
