As for the diffuser being too studio, What I'd do is:
-Make a new layer on top of the diffuser, and brush some colors from the floor and then set the layer to multiply.
-If that fails then maybe try the burn tool.
Also for a bit of extra atmosphere you can try to use the photo filters, or burn the corners of the background.
