If you were to rank all the Choppers in the community....

How would you do it?

That's the question I propose to you guys.......

Would you build in a rating system on everybody's profiles where other artists can rate them on a scale of 1-10? Then tally up everybody's scores to give grandtotals then work out who's got the highest average rating and therefore number#1 from there?

Would you make it a combination of things?: Competition rankings + comp leaderboard position + wtb standings .. +..? Would you put a 5 star rating system on everybody's chop threads so users can rate each others chops?... there are multiple possibilities.... a lot of ways of looking at this question. Also other things like profile views etc may come into play (albeit insignificantly...). Also of course chopper levels have a big impact on ranking within the community as well.. The real issue there is how to determine the number chopper you are within your chopper level.

My way at looking at the problem, is bottomline, the number 1 goal here is to have it community driven. Like how youtube works etc for video. We know what they do works. Now all that's needed to be done is figure out an equation that will relate to chopping, and work that back in here..... simple hey?

Sort of. And that's why I need your help. What's your take on it? What method would you use to rank every member in the community?
this idea have always sounded impossible do to the number of choppers around but i think the easiest way would be the points system . the member with the most points takes the lead . so here is the way i Imagined it :

every chop thread have a thumbs up and down buttons and each thumb up will increase the rating of the chop so if it gets 5 stars the chopper gets 10 points for it instead of every member comes and gives the choppers 10 points for example . and maybe the winner of each round in comps gets 20 points or something and for wtb winners 100 points

thats what i wanted to do for my forum but its gone now

You're on the right path with your suggestions there shadow. A points based scheme is definitely how this concept must work.

The underlying code going behind this system was always to be built on a points structure. Whether or not those points will actually be displayed anywhere (other than used only by the database) is a different story.... I'm thinking only showing a final ranking (i.e. #1 chopper, #2 chopper..... rank #3251 chopper) is important to be displayed.. In summary: all choppers will be ordered by their total points they have (I've thought through this concept before and things such as penalty's and bonuses can come into play here too..), and the one with the most ends up on top and therefore = rank no.1.

The question is what is used to generate and compile these points. What you mentioned about WTB = +100pts, Comp rounds = +20pts etc are all great ideas, furthermore it's along the lines of how this will work. How much to assign each activity in terms of points worth (weighting) is another question to think further through.

In terms of rating systems like this, I see issues arising is things such as: how to weight things evenly. I.e. what if a chopper does an amazing chop, but does only 1 chop.. compared to other choppers who have done say 10+ chops of high quality (but not amazing), the averages may be skewed in this scenario to favor the guy who's done less chops... When I talk about a weighting system, this means obviously total # of chops has to come into play and factor into the equation too. This will resolve any unevenness and make it fair. Pretty complex hey! Keep suggestions and ideas coming guys.. with everyones input we'll definitely come out with a pretty solid system.
Oh dear God this is a subject. I think do it like cardomain. Rate different aspects. Like rate brushing, copy paste style, background changes, lighting, style, creativity, stuff like that which when rated, can help the chopper see what they need improvement in based on anonymous rating.

Then you could have like leaderboards of ratings based on each type of rating. So people who don't brush crazy designs, but have realistic copy paste and concept elements (me for example) can be ranked in a sub-board and have the chance to be top dog in that category B)

Just my 2 cents but i think rating on different elements of chopping is what the choppers want to see for improvement
92% of the teenage population has moved on to rap. if you are part of the 8% that stayed with rock, put this in your profile
That's a refreshing take on the concept there... rather interesting. It falls alongside something else that the admin and myself had been discussing some time ago - that's the notion of awards i.e. brushing awards, copy/paste awards, award for most realistic etc. One thing I do propose as a pre-requisite for this system is to make it as easy as possible to use, in terms of providing a rating for each and every chopping aspect is rather extensive and a large overhead - Would users put in the effort to use all these features?

I do quite like the benefit it gives to the users, meaning they can see where they stand in each department in comparison with everyone else. Leading on from that though, again would this amount of ratings become overkill and having so much information, would we find people not using it and therefore rending the underlying concept useless..?

These are all points to consider. I do like the suggestion a lot though. I'll head over to cardomain and scope it out. I think for now the phase 1 aim is to keep it simple as possible. Get some form of system off the ground, spend a little time growing into it and then look at introducing further features to enhance it.
just one worry is that you could have someone post tons of mediocre chops and have a high ranking because they got 1-2 points for each chop and end up getting say 20 points, whereas someone might spend a long time doing one and get 20 points for it. this would indicate from an outside perspective that they would be at the same level. just something to consider. plus having a system that in order to begin voting you need to contibute to the forum. say, you can only vote if you post a chop and comment 100 times +

Here's my take on it:

The rating system needs to be done through a consistent medium, meaning that overactive choppers have no advantage over less active choppers, but may be given a slight advantage if they are more active on the forum. The only possible way i can think that would come into play is to have a ranking system built into profiles, something everybody would see, and something everybody has one of. I think a simple thumbs up, thumbs down system would work pretty well, but it would have to be well shown, right up there at the top of the profile, and also a thumbs up/down icon next to the users name whenever they post a thread/post/reply anywhere on the forum.

Points can then be added by an admin based on forum lead challenges, such as competitions for profile showoffs (which would give a boost anyway due to profile views gained from it) Also, it would be a big incentive for users to participate in comps.

Personally, I don't think a points system based on style would be sensible as every chopper is completely different, and not everyone's cup of tea.
Hello.
I honestly don't think there is a way to rate each chopper and make a ranking list.
Every chop could be rated and the average rating could be shown in the profile, and there should be competitions with a ranking like in 2009.
But it's impossible to find one rating with everything included. There are too many aspects you can rate and especially the fact that not everyone does the same number of chops makes it impossible.
You know you wanna click it!

I have an idea. At every chop other artist could rate some elements from that chop.
like this

Execution : 10/10
Creativity : bla bla
and other stuff.
If a chopper has problems at bla bla....he know what to improve at his skills...
sorry for my bad english :D
PS: if someone said this idea srry////i didn't read all ur comments

I like the idea of the diferrent aspects and that the rating would be available only with commenting a chop.
