Does anyone know of any good free video editing software?

I think the title says it all!

I'm just after a good app to create a 'wip reel'. I've got Avid xPress but it's playin up at the moment :(. And I've also got Ulead Video studio which I got with one of my old graphic cards but I've never bothered to install that yet.

Even if you don't know of any good free ones, can you list what one you use anyway?
I use Magix Video Deluxe 2008. Got it for 10€ because the packaging was a little damaged.
I think there´s a free version called Magix video deluxe silver, but I was not able to find it.
You know you wanna click it!

I'd tried AVS Video Editor 4.

Its what i used to make my autemo promotional video and it is a good piece of software.
I use After Effects CS3 to make my wip reels.

It's basically Photoshop but with motion, animation and virtual 3D. You can even brush in AE and animate it!

After Effects is THE best motion graphics/effect production software there is. It's not exactly video editing software although that too is possible.

Your best bet is to try out those ones you have and see what you can do with them. I also recommend trying to search for previous versions of AE in case you can get it for a good price. The CS4 costs over 1000EUR around here I think.
Thanks for the info guys, and especially to you for the tips Olli. It was the wip reel you did that inspired me to give it a shot! I've got Ulead up and running, but its kinda cumbersome... After Effects sounds pretty good. I suppose it's Adobe afterall so that says nuff :-d I think I'm entitled to a 'student' edition of the adobe suite thru uni so I'll have to see just how much discount that entitles..

Another quick question for you Olli, how many screencaptures/images did you use to make up your vid?
The Viper reel has about 35 jpg images.

I got my Adobe software with the student discount as well. It's the Production Premium CS3 package and it was 330EUR. Not bad for a dozen of top quality software! Adobe states though, that the student package should not be used for commercial work. Or evil.

But, can't you go and buy the "updating" version to full nonstudent version, loads cheaper than totally new one (cs3 or cs4?)

Well that means I'm ok then. I don't work for Microsoft :P

Yeah, you can if you have a licensed previous version but it's definitely not cheaper then the student license. The full pro package license upgrade from CS3 to CS4 costs 600 US dollars.
:(
that is ALOT
how much is it from it to pro cs3?
i tried to look, but couldnt find anything... ( i mean the one with all the aeffects, etc)
